How Green & Gold CSA works:
Share pickup is market-style and free choice. You will be assigned a certain number of items to take home, and you get to choose what you’d like from the weekly spread. You may double up on some items, while other items are limited to one per share to ensure that there’s enough for everyone. Our CSA members get first dibs on all produce, except new harvests when there’s not enough yet for every member (such as early fruiting crops).
Shares are lighter and full of tender greens during the late spring. They bulk up in the summer with a rainbow of color and an almost-overwhelming bounty. In the fall, they are full of starchy, satisfying storage crops and the return of leafy greens. Our produce comes to you freshly picked, so it will last longer than grocery store produce, if you store it right—that’s our promise of quality. Vegetables from season to season are listed below—if you’re curious about what varieties we grow, they’re listed in the Vegetable Dictionary under Resources.
Summer & end of Spring: Arugula, basil, beans, beets, bok choy, broccoli, broccoli raab, cabbage, carrots, chard, cilantro, cucumbers, dill, fennel, eggplant, garlic and scapes, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, leeks, peas, peppers, melons, parsley, potatoes, scallions, spinach, summer squash and zucchini, onions, tomatoes, tatsoi, salad turnips.
Fall: Arugula, beets, broccoli, broccoli raab, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, celery, cauliflower, chard, eggplant, escarole, fennel, garlic, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsley, parsnips, peppers, potatoes, shallots, spinach, radicchio, radishes, rutabaga, tatsoi, salad and storage turnips, winter squash.
We have two share sizes: large and small. Large shares receive between 6-9 items to choose per week (usually eight) and small shares, 4-6 (usually five). Item counts vary depending on season (less in the lean springtime) or price of items (for example, winter squash and tomatoes are inherently more expensive due to their weight and the resources it takes to grow them). Our large share size is meant to provide the vegetables for 4-5 meals, or more, per week to a family of four. It will also satisfy two adults who prepare the majority of their own food and are well-versed in vegetables. Our small share is great for an individual, or a couple who eats out often; also ideal for families who are new to the CSA or who have large gardens of their own. This being said, our two-person, one-canine family goes through the equivalent of multiple large shares per week - so sizing truly varies from household to household.
We run two CSA seasons: Summer (12 weeks, mid-June through late August) and Autumn (8 weeks, early September through late October). They can be combined into a Full Season share for 20 weeks. We split summer and fall to easily accommodate the school year, to allow Vermont summer residents to take part in a local CSA, and to create more affordable options for those who want to take part in a CSA. Please not that Summer shares are limited, very popular, and usually sell out to returning members early. Current share prices are:
Full Season Shares (summer + fall): $455 (small) or $680 (large)
Summer Shares, June-August: $275 (small) or $410 (large)
Autumn Shares, September-October: $185 (small) or $275 (large)
You may pay for your shares with a personal check or through Paypal. In addition, you may pay for your whole share up front, or utilize our payment plan (half due at signup, half due on/before your first pickup week). We will email you detailed invoices and instructions a business day or two after you sign up. If you need a more lenient way of paying, please email. While we cannot undercharge for our produce because of all the hard work that goes into growing food, we believe everybody has the right to good food, and we can work out more flexible payment timing.
Members pick up their shares weekly from our different pickup locations:
Golden Rule Mead (8 Elm St, Middlebury, VT), Wednesday 3-6 pm.
On the farm (150 Horton Rd, Sudbury VT), Tuesdays and Fridays 4-6 pm. (You do not have to choose a pickup day - come either Tuesday or Friday, any week!)
If you cannot pick up on a given week, you will need to have a friend or family member ready to pick up for you or to enjoy your vegetables.
Please bring your own containers to pickup every week. Canvas bags, coolers, baskets, reused paper or plastic bags, jackets - we’ve seen it all! We try very hard as a farm to reduce plastic waste; single-use plastic bags are also banned in the great state of Vermont.
We provide an important weekly newsletter, emailed to you, to help identify unknown vegetables and provide information to cook with. We also let you know what is to be harvested the next week, if mother nature allows, so that you can plan meals ahead of time. The newsletter is integral to the CSA experience - it contains recipes, notes about the farm, and identifies all the vegetables available in the share. Your farmers spend a few hours every week on the newsletter and we urge you to utilize it!
